The Last Argument We Had

I blame Etsy.

Basically, we had an argument because our walls are unbearably bare in our apartment, and I want to put something on them.  We decided a long time ago that we aren't going to paint our apartment.  While it would seriously add character to paint it up like we'd like it, we aren't willing to shell out the money to paint property that isn't ours twice.  (We'd have to paint it back white upon moving out.)

We're also currently saving up for and contemplating where to buy our first home.  This has me in all sorts of Pinterest inspired dreams of how we could decorate it and what I would do if we had our own place.  I'm really excited to buy our first house, though it is still at least another year away, and I just like dreaming about it.  I've never been a really creative type when it comes to decorating, but I blame this on a serious lack of money and always having been a renter in my adult life.  This is going to change.

This is how the fight went down:

Scene: Andy had just come home from his soccer game, and sat down next to me on the couch where I was curled up with my iPad.  I'd been perusing art on Etsy searching for pieces to compliment the room ideas I had floating around in my head.

Me: Hey, what do you think about this for in the kitchen?

Andy: Which kitchen?

Me: Our kitchen.

Andy: This one here?

Me: Well sure, but I was really thinking about the house.

Andy: Whose house?

Me: Our house!

Andy: Where exactly is this house?

Me: I don't know!  Does it matter?

Andy: Don't you think it is a little more important to know where this future house will be before we start decorating it already?

Me: NO I DON'T!

Andy: I just don't see the point of getting all excited about decorating when...

Me: You do realize that we can decorate where we live now too right?

Andy: Well, I just...

Me: You just want us to have to purchase all of this stuff at once?

Andy: I'm just saying that we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves.

Me: And I'm just saying that we can start buying some of this stuff now to make it feel more like home here too and then move it to the new house and to spread out the spending and make it pinch less on our budget for the house.

Andy: The one we don't even own yet?

Me: Yes.

Andy: Oh...ok.

And then we went to bed.

  1. Aww! I hope your saving and house searching process goes by fast so you dont have to have any more arguments like this :) ...although speaking from experience, once you buy a house there will be a whole new set of things to argue over ;)

    1. I like to think that we're typically on the same page about most things, and then we talked about decorating. Here's hoping it all goes smoothly. :-)

  2. Hahahahahaha. YES! That is the husband/wife version of decorating if I've ever heard it. I think we need a new couch (which we DO). My husband wonders why, since we have a couch. It doesn't matter how awful it is, it's there so why would we need a different one. He's legitimately baffled. If I was dream decorating a future house it would BLOW. HIS. MIND.

Pinterest on with your decorating self! --Lisa

    1. Thanks for the encouragement Lisa! If only Andy & I could inhabit the same dream space like in Inception...ahh...extra bonus points if he looked like Leo there too.

  3. My daughter is getting ready to leave the nest and buy her first house. She already has the house decorated down to the last detail in her mind. She keeps bringing home things she has "bought for the house." The house she doesn't own yet. Her dad is totally baffled.

  4. Visiting from SITS! Sounds like our house! We've been here 20 years and still have my bedroom furniture that I bought in college at a consignment store! Did I just admit that?!!! I'm with you...start picking up stuff you love now...it's too hard to do a whole house at once!!

    1. Thank you! Gathering ideas and materials before hand makes it easier later...or at least I hope so.

  6. He just doesn't get it. Decorating a house is what girls like to do... it doesn't matter if the house is real or not.

    I get you, I totally do. :)

  8. I guess I was unlucky (or lucky?) to not have heard of Pinterest or Etsy when we bought our current house. Oh man, I would have gone crazy!!

  9. TRUTH! I wish hubs hadn't convinced me to buy so much Target furniture when we rented - we ended moving fiberboard furniture a LOT (if didn't hold up). I say buy what you love no matter where you are or what the future holds.

    1. EXACTLY! I want to LOVE our stuff, not just get things to fill the space.

  10. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. I stay away from etsy or I will have no money. Also, I tend to go ahead and paint the walls, but I'm a painter by trade, so putting things back to white is no big deal to me.

Thanks for stopping by Life in Left Field.

    1. Painting with 2 kids running around sounds really challenging. Etsy is such a great habit though really. I highly recommend shopping there for beautiful things.
